The IHI IS38 / 9VA04 turbo is the highest performance, quickest spooling OEM+ turbo upgrade available for the VW Mk7 / Mk7.5 Golf, GTI, and Audi 8V A3. Give your German-engineered performance car the power the Golf R, Audi S3, and TTS come equipped with from the Audi / VW factory! This is an OEM turbo for those machines.
This turbocharger is a direct bolt-on replacement for your factory IS12 or IS20 turbo. The only additional modification required is a software upgrade (tune/calibration) to match the turbo upgrade. It is a 100% brand new OEM factory IS38 turbocharger and the latest revision. With this turbocharger added to your VW or Audi, you'll be able to achieve your horsepower goals. After installing this bolt-on, drop-in turbo you can expect to gain up to +149 FT-LBS of torque and +170 WHP bringing the power numbers up to 397hp 403ft-lbs with proper tuning, exhaust system, intercooler, and intake.
The 2 most common turbos swapped for the IS38 are the IS12 and IS20 turbos. The IS12 turbo is mounted from the factory on VW and Audi 1.8t MQB engines, and the IS20 is mounted on 2.0t lower output MQB engines. When upgrading any of the following turbos you will need to install new software on your engine's computer to properly run the vehicle with an IS38 turbo on it.
WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN UPGRADING TO AN IS38 TURBO?
When properly tuned the IHI IS38 turbo will give you more power. Oftentimes people are concerned that a larger turbo will cause more turbo lag. While this is a legitimate concern, the IS38 is not drastically larger and will only result in a few hundred RPM difference for max boost, which is hardly noticeable in a real-world application.
PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE
We recommend checking your coolant level when retro-fitting the IS38 turbo on your VW Golf, GTI, or Audi A3, as well as changing the engine oil. Please note that you must have records of performing an oil change with VW-approved oil in order to qualify for warranty coverage for this turbocharger.
Recommended: Spark Plugs NGK heat range 9 (NGK-R7437-9) spark plugs gapped to 0.024″ ±0.002″ or 0.6mm ±0.05mm with a change interval of 10-15,000 mi or 16-24,000 km.
